Optimizing your Varnish
If you are using Varnish Plus, you probably already know that Varnish delivers what it claims it will deliver - speed, performance, scalability, high availability and all the other good stuff Varnish Plus is known for. But, because you’re probably not a Varnish expert yourself, you might not recognize when and if your Varnish instance goes out of sync or when there could be infrastructure optimizations and VCL implementations that could be better.
A health check is something we routinely do for ourselves, our cars, and all kinds of other essential appliances. We try to monitor and get ahead of potential problems systematically and regularly. Varnish Plus (and other critical applications) is no different in that it performs best when it has been inspected, checked and its setup improved for optimal health.
Is my Varnish Plus healthy… or is it time for a fresh coat of paint?
Now that the idea of Varnish health is in your head, consider for a moment the cost-benefit analysis of getting a 360-view into your Varnish Plus instance and its performance by asking yourself a few questions:
- Is my Varnish Plus configured properly (and if not, what will that mean for performance, availability, scalability, user experience)?
- Is my Varnish Plus instance playing nicely with other parts of the infrastructure (and if not, what will that mean for performance and cost, etc.)?
- What could it mean to performance and cost if anything in my Varnish Plus instance could be simplified or optimized for improvements and gains?
- Can I avoid costly, time-consuming future situations or conflicts with a health check/early detection of problems, and what is the potential savings there (monetarily/downtime, in user and employee frustration, etc.)? Are bigger problems coming (e.g., I’m still using Varnish 3 - will I run into major problems if I don’t migrate to Varnish 4)?
