Varnish 2018 - A sneak peek

It’s exciting times, and there are quite a few new things going on here at Varnish Software! We have been thinking about how to better serve our customers and the needs of the market, which has led us to create - and soon release - a new set of offerings, which the Varnish team has been working on for quite some time.

Since the launch of Varnish Plus four years ago the content delivery market in which we operate and the related use cases have developed to the point that they require a more specialized approach. To better meet these needs we decided to offer three new enterprise solutions tailored to solve the specific challenges posed by web performance, streaming and content delivery: Varnish API and Web Acceleration, Varnish Streaming Server and Varnish DIY CDN. These solutions will initially be available as on-premise subscriptions and later also on public cloud platforms. We’ve listened to our customers and done our utmost to include specific features in each of the solutions that will meet their needs and solve their challenges.

If you are already a customer and using Varnish Plus you will be able to continue doing so, of course, or you can choose to upgrade to one of the new solutions. The new Varnish solutions will be based on the new Varnish 6.0 release, which is now fully HTTP/2 compliant and includes new features that will make your Varnish-based content delivery more efficient and secure.

On March 6th we will also be releasing Varnish 6.0 under limited availability. This new release supports H/2 and introduces groundbreaking new security features (stay tuned for the announcement). In addition, the community will release Varnish Cache 6.0 on March 15, according to the existing release schedule established by Poul-Henning Kamp.

Focus on security and data protection

2018 has been referred to by many as the ”year of security”, as security has shifted from just being a high priority for most organizations to becoming a key focus. This is partly due to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on May 25. To support our customers in becoming fully compliant we will release Varnish Total Encryption as a part of the Varnish 6.0 release. Varnish Total Encryption is a feature that allows you to encrypt your cached data, leveraging AES 256 encryption. This together with our existing SSL/TLS support for both back and front-end traffic will help make your data processing exceptionally secure. Adding to that, the new Varnish WAF (web application firewall), currently under development and being tested in the Varnish lab (and which is proving to perform better than expected), will be a great addition to the data protection features we offer customers.

There is a lot more to come in 2018, so stay tuned for more updates. We hope you will love our new offerings. As always, let us know -  we depend on your feedback.
